Writing by Hand

Day one hundred forty/365. Have we lost the practice of writing personal cards, letters, notes, by hand? I cannot recall the last time I wrote someone a letter, other than a thank-you note.
It even seems that there are fewer public mail boxes than there used to be. Is that the Postal Service cutting back on stops, and therefore expenses? Or, is it that e-mail, faxes, and a less personal way of life have overtaken the more genteel courtesies we used to extend?
A co-worker, some fifteen years ago, even commented that we’re losing the ability, and the need, for cursive writing. When we’re not using a keyboard, we’re printing on a form.
Today, I mailed two birthday cards. I signed my name, my wife’s name, our son’s, and the names of our pets. In cursive. But, even the sentiment was printed for me. By a company who had hired a professional writer. And, I’m sure I could have done better. Most people could.
Isn’t it cool when we do receive a few lines from someone’s pen? Wouldn’t it be good self-discipline to try to recover the practice of hand writing letters? At least once in a while . . .
